The 2012 Nautique IWWF AAO Waterski & Wakeboard Championships incorporating the Asian Waterski & Wakeboard Championships & Asian U17 Waterski Championships commenced on Friday 24th August 2012. The event kicked off with the Under 17’s all day. The preliminary rounds of the Asian, Australasian & Oceanian (AAO) championships continued on Saturday with slalom and tricks followed by a ski show by the Stars of Florida. In the evening a spectacular and entertaining opening ceremony welcomed the 12,000 athletes participating in a variety of sports at the annual Chuncheon Leisure Sports Games of which waterskiing and wakeboarding are a part.
Operating on two sites the wakeboarders took to the water on one, whilst on the main site the finals of the Under 17’s took place. Having already shattered the Malaysian national trick record with 4220 points in the preliminary round of the Women’s event Aaliyah Yoong Hanifah comfortably took gold in the U17’s with a score of 3230pts breaking her own existing Asian U17 record. Park Jae Yung wins U17 Boys tricks for Korea.
Indra Hardinata (INA) won the U17 Boys slalom gold with a sensational new record of 0.5/58/12m while Kalya Kee of Singapore took gold in U17 Girls slalom.
Unfortunately a typhoon is now threatening the competition so an emergency plan is now in operation to conclude the event a day early before the storm hits.
