2011 Nautique IWWF Asian Waterski & Wakeboard Championships

Thursday, October 6, 2011

img_1957-1.jpgThe 2011 Nautique IWWF Asian Waterski  & Wakeboard Championships commenced today, the 5th of October 2011, at Kelab Tasik (Lake Club) Putrajaya, Malaysia. “A perfect venue,” commented Hanifah Yinfah, event director, “surrounded by the iconic buildings of the Putra Mosque, the Prime Minister’s Offices and the Sultan’s Palace, making a magnificent backdrop for the Asian Championships.”

Some 100 waterskiers and wakeboard riders from 14 countries have assembled in Putrajaya to compete in these annual championships.

Unfortunately at first it appeared the weather gods were not going to co-operate delaying the start after drizzle set in and thunder rolled overhead. Fortunately it was not to last and the inaugural Under 17 Championships got underway. First off in U17 was 13-year old Nur Alimah Priambodo, from Surabaya, who took the first round in girls tricks with a score of 2030, with young Malaysian protégé Aaliyah Yoong Hanifah lying second with 1700.

Four countries were represented in the U17 boys trick competition with 6-year old Thiery Grappe the youngest competitor from Thailand (THA). However, it was Widodo Safaraldi from Indonesia (INA), with a score of 2710, who topped the leader-board after the preliminary round.

Kalya Kee(SIN) ran two clear passes of the six-buoy slalom before coming unstuck after 2.5 buoys at 55kph but holds the lead after the other competitors crashed out on their first passes. Highlight of the U17 boys slalom was Indra Hardinata’s three clean passes before stumbling at the fourth buoy to finish with 3.5 buoys on a 14.25m line.

Nur Alimah from Surabaya failed to land any of her three jumps and will miss out on the U17 girls jump finals.img_2001-1.jpg

There were similar results in the U17 boys jump competition with both Guruh Dwi (INA) and Khaled Alali (UAE) crashing out whilst Shamal Abd. Rahman (MAS) set a benchmark jump of 21.2m before Widodo Safaraldi (INA) last off the dock, jumped into the lead with his final jump of 27.1m.

The open skiers and wakeboard riders are looking forward to the start of their competitions tomorrow.

2nd Asian Beach Games - 14 Dec 2010

Tuesday, December 14, 2010
Posted by Paul

A blue cloudless sky welcomed the 60 competitors to the beach site at Qantab, Muscat, Oman, for the start of competition in waterskiing’s inaugural participation in the Asian Beach Games.

The seas had moderated considerably overnight but would still prove challenging for skiers and riders more used to fresh water lakes.

First off were the twelve women wakeboard riders split into two quarter-final heats. With the top three competitors going through to the semi-finals it was Han Qiu (China) who topped heat one. Unsurprisingly in the more competitive heat Asian champion Chen Li-li topped the heat followed by Sasha Christian (SIN).

Jeanne Alfailakawi (KUW) was unfortunate just to miss out placing 4th in the heat but still stands a good chance of qualifying via the Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ).

Competition in the men’s wakeboard competition was especially fierce with just the top two from the four quarter- final heats automatically going through to the semi-finals. It was particularly unfortunate for Hong Kong’s Julien Briestroff and Ronnie Cheung Ho Leung to be drawn in the same heat competing against Bunyalo Jumruang of Thailand (THA). After an excellent run Julien with 63.13 lead Ronnie with 59.24 before Bunyalo scored an impressive 68.35 relegating Cheung to the LCQ’s. In any other heat Cheung’s score would have also taken him straight into the semi-finals. Those topping the other heats and going straight into the semi-finals include Asian champion Padiwat Jaemjan (THA), Insang Jung (KOR) and Zhang Wei (CHN).

The women’s tricks followed with eleven participants competing including the Asian Game’s youngest competitor  7-years old Hanifah Aaliya Young of Malaysia.  With a score of 1420 she held off competition from her elder sister Phillippa 1,250 to stand in 4th place against the three Chinese women trick skiers Jiang Hui 1,820, Soong Yu-fei 2,050 and Li Jin-mei  2,100.

Making his debut in an Asian event was Adel Mans. Al Harbi of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, however  at the end of the day it was Maliki Zulkarnaini of Indonesia (INA)1850,Lun Sibo (CHN)1,870 and Kim Dongha (KOR) 2,960 who topped the leader board.

In the women’s LCQ it was Jeanne Alfailakawi who best responded to the challenge and qualified along with Dini Imaniar (INA).

The conditions were again deteriorating for the men’s LCQ which saw Carlo Dela Torre and Robert Caratti both from the Philippines take LCQ1 and 2 respectively.  Fortunately Ronnie Cheung topped LCQ3 along with Tatsanai Kuaakoonrat (THA) and scrape into the semi-finals.

Competition starts again tomorrow morning at 0900.

2nd Asian Beach Games, Muscat, Oman

24 trick skiers and 36 wakeboard riders, representing 13 countries have assembled here in Muscat , Oman, for water skiing’s first participation in the Asian Beach Games from 8-16 December 2010.

Organised in conjunction with the Olympic Council of Asia the inaugural games were held in Bali in 2008.

While conditions in the bay at Qantab have been calm all week reports indicate that winds of 60km/hr in the Middle East have disrupted shipping in the Suez Canal and Red Sea. Consequently the seas around Oman have been rougher than expected making the familiarisation practice difficult for both skiers and riders.

Hot favourite for the wakeboard event is the Thai rider Jaemjat Padiwat(Bom), reigning Asian Male Champion, and Chen Li-li (China) women’s Champion at the recently concluded Asian Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia .

The trick skiing event is wide open with Japan missing from the competition leaving the Malaysians, Koreans and Chinese vying for the honours.

AAO Waterski Wakeboard & Barefoot Championships

Monday, October 11, 2010
Posted by Chris

img_8688-1-19.jpgUnfortunately early on  mechanical problems and inclement weather resulted in extensive disruption to the programme but with considerable juggling by Paul Fong AAO Confederation President,  in consultation with the Chief Judge and the officials from barefoot and wakeboard  a revised programme was devised which was ultimately completed satisfactorily, much to everyone’s relief. The Indonesian  Water Ski Federation did a remarkable job in organizing the event and  there was nothing but praise for their efforts after  a longtime absence in hosting such events.

Wakeboard events scheduled for the final day were switched to Saturday as, with their familiarization cancelled by the weather, they needed to get out on the water and at least have one round of scores on the board in case the programme continued to be disrupted. The slalom finals were deferred to the last day while men’s jump, which normally wraps up the event were held on Saturday.img_8637-barefoot.jpg                                          img_8680-1-hirosawa-saaya-aao-w-jump.jpg

The barefooters completed their events mostly rising before dawn to enjoy calm conditions at 05:45 although again this was interrupted on Saturday by rain.

Wakeboard was the biggest casualty with the only the top six from the AAO results going forward into the Asian finals, rather than all riding again in a separate competition. This was obviously disappointing for some riders.

Team Australia recovered the John Kumm Shield after losing it for the first time ever in 2008,while Team China took home the gold medals in the Asian Tournament Team event. Medal winners included img_8737-1-barefoot-women-jump.jpgimg_8880-1.jpg
